What is it
THE PORTAL is a magazine explaining and promoting a popular form of artist community event in Asia called “Qihua”. The magazine contains 16 pages of content fully illustrated and designed by me.
Put simply, Qihua is a form of community where artists from different spectrums of the creative industries come together and create a creative environment to take inspiration from each other.
Who is it for
Following on from community research, I set my target audience to be the new generation artists who are interested in character design and is searching for a community to be apart of, artists that has been working in a set genre of art and wants to do something new, who wants to find inspirations from others, make friends with other artists, people who has an audience pool of artists and wants to start a Qihua project but don’t know how, and newcomers looking for some guidance.
Challenges
The biggest problems that I faced in designing this magazine is that I was worried that I wouldn't be able to explain this activity well enough or make it appeal enough for people to want to get to know it. To solve that, other than trying my best to make a step-by-step guide for Qihua, I also made an effort to make the overall brand style seem welcoming and that people would be curious even just for the design's sake. To achieve that goal, I took inspiration from some magazines that I find that the design is welcoming and appealing.
